Omega-3 is shorthand for a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids dominated by EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). EPA is associated with cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory effects; DHA is the structural fatty acid of the brain and retina. ALA (alpha-linolenic acid, from flax and chia) is plant-based but converts poorly to EPA/DHA in humans.

Sources. Most commercial supplements are sourced from cold-water fish (sardines, anchovies, mackerel) or — for vegetarians and those with fish allergies — from algae. Look for IFOS, GOED, USP or NSF third-party purity certification.

Doses. EFSA suggests 250 mg combined EPA+DHA daily as the adult population reference; therapeutic doses in trials span 1-3 g/day for cardiovascular and triglyceride benefit. Paediatric reference values per EFSA: 100 mg DHA from infancy through age 24 months; 250 mg EPA+DHA from age 2 onwards.

Safety. Generally well-tolerated. The most common side effect is fishy aftertaste, reduced by enteric-coated capsules or refrigeration. Discuss with a clinician before use if you take anticoagulants (warfarin, DOACs); high doses prolong bleeding time. A 7-14 day washout before surgery is standard.
